Mount Everest

Hi, I'm Hunter from Tectonic Travel Tips.  Have you ever wanted to see one of the most beautiful tectonic collisions of all time?  This place is Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on earth at 29029 feet.  It is at exactly 27 degrees 58' 48" N, 86 degrees 55' 17".  I traveled here for the culture of Nepal but left with the views of the Himalayas.  This place is so spectacular but you tectonic travelers I know are thinking, how was this made?  This is a convergent collision boundary.  This happens when two continental plates collide.  This causes a non-volcanic mountain range to form a little ways away from the plate.  The reason why there are not two Himalayas on either side of the fault line is because where the Himalayas are there was previously a volcanic mountain range caused by subduction.  This type of boundary is pretty mild on tectonic events, has very tall mountains, and has beautiful views.

Japan Nuclear

Attention all people in Japan.  These has just been a failure of the core reactor of the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant near Sendai.  This is in the #3 reactor and is releasing radiation everywhere.  Can you imagine that this whole catastrophe was caused by two plates rubbing together.  Well if you want my advice, I would tell you to get out of japan.

Japan

Attention travelers going to Japan.  There has just been a 9.0 earthquake with major aftershocks.  This has also created a 30 foot tsunami so move to higher grounds if any other earthquake happens. The location is at  38°19'19.20"N, 142°22'8.40"E.  This is the 7th biggest earthquake on record.

This earthquake was caused by subduction. Subduction is caused when one plate goes underneath the other, in this case an ocean under a continental. This creates a trench and a volcanic mountain range that formed Japan.  Unfortunately there are also a lot of earthquakes and these faults.  At this boundary there has been a significant history of major earthquakes.  This has made Japan one of the most earthquake ready nations but they still couldn't hold up to this.  This was a crushing blow and please donate to Japan.

Christchurch New Zealand

Hi, this is Hunter with a news flash.  Attention travelers in New Zealand.  There has been a 7.1 magnitude earthquake 40k west of Christchurch at 43 degrees 32' S, 172 degrees 07' E.  This has had extensive damage to all buildings in the area.  Also all commercial planes are grounded because of the risk of aftershocks and a cracked runway.  This earthquake has been caused by a transform fault called the Alpine fault running the length of the island.  A transform fault is a fault that moves past each each other.

This a fault type where a lot of earthquakes happen.  Recently there have been 7 other earthquakes in the last 150 years that range from 7.1-7.8 magnitude earthquakes. This fault has a variety of geological features it produces.  Like in New Zealand it produced mountains, at the Dead Sea it produced a rift valley and in California it is flat.  Most of these features aren't created by the fault because there is little pressure exerted on either plate.  Most of these features are created by how the fault was moving before it became at transform fault.  The main way you can tell a transform fault from the others is that the transform fault is one of the few that is very easy to see because there is no pressure or volcanos where they are. This fault also forms no volcanos because there is no pressure or melting rock to do so.

Eyjafjallajökull - Iceland Revisit

This volcano eruption has taken a turn for the worst.  There is a highly unstable jet stream that has transported tons of ash to europe.  This has caused a complete shutdown of all of the airports in Europe.  This mean if your in U.K. or all of northern europe your fight home may be a while.  So sit tight and watch me on Tectonic News Flash and you will get all of the updates that you need.

Eyjafjallajökull - Iceland

Hi, this is Hunter from tectonic news.  It is april 14, 2010.  This is a warning to the travelers in europe, There has just been an eruption at the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland, 67 degrees 37' n, 19 degrees 37' w.  It has caused 800 people southwest of the volcano to evacuate.  This may effect you travel home because planes are grounded because of ash in the air from this explosion.  This is a major tectonic event.  This is sitting on the mid atlantic ridge.  This is a chain a of mountain that run down the atlantic.  These were formed because of a divergent connection between the North american plate and the Eurasian plate.  The caused a large chain of volcanos to form across the bottom of the ocean.  Iceland is sitting on top of this ridge making it very volcanically active, making powerful earthquakes a possibility for Ice.
